Nutrition Tips for Children

Our children are the hope of the world.  We want to raise them in such a way that they would become good and concerned individuals in the future. We want them to live a good life. We want them to have healthy bodies and be proud of themselves. Most of all, we want them to be the best they can be.

Parents should help their kids to eat a healthy diet and convince them to exercise regularly to reduce the risk of experiencing health problems now and in their later years. We should prevent our kids from becoming obese or overweight.  These conditions may cause health problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and other related diseases to the children as they mature into adults. In order to prevent our kids from these conditions, it is therefore, important for parents to follow some nutrition tips for their children.

As parents, it is necessary for us to set as good examples to our children. We must show to them that we care for their health.  We need to prepare healthy foods for them and encourage them to eat those foods.  Parents should also eat those healthy foods themselves so that their children will follow. We should also practice family meals – eating together as a family. In this way, both parents and the kids could talk over some things they need to discuss, and it is sort of a bonding for all of them.  Do not battle over foods, instead, let your kids understand the importance of each food to their health.  We need to make a variety of foods containing vitamins and minerals needed for our kids.  The meals should include the three basic kinds of foods: go foods, glow foods and grow foods.  For breakfast, we should prepare foods that are high in fibers.  This also includes foods such as bread, cereals, cheese, oats and a lot more. Fresh fruit juice is also advisable to drink because it contains high fiber.  For lunch, grow and glow foods are highly recommended.  Examples of grow foods are chicken, fish, pork, beef and others.  Glow foods, on the other hand, includes fruits and vegetables. For dinner, it is usually the same as the food for lunch but the intake for dinner should be lesser in comparison to lunch.  This is because a person’s body is no longer very much active in the evening compared during the day. For snacks, it is advisable to prepare foods such as bread with peanut butter or cheese, yogurt, celery, whole-grain crackers and fruits.  Be sure to make it easy for the kids to eat their snacks.

Another important thing for parents to consider is the stocking up of healthy foods.  Children usually eat foods that are already available at home. They just open the refrigerator and get something they like and love to eat.  So it is important for parents to control the foods stocked in their house.  We must make sure that the foods we have are less in fat and high in nutrients.  Another thing to consider is the ability to eat appropriately and not overeat.  We should teach our children the feeling of fullness.  When the stomach is already full, learn to say no for another food serving.  In this way, we can teach our kids the right way of eating and keep them away from becoming overweight.  Lastly, we should make our kids get involved with the decision, especially on what to prepare for their meals.  Kids usually enjoy deciding what food to eat for their meal. Talk to them regarding food nutrition and balanced diet so that they will know what foods to eat and what foods to avoid.  Children may also participate in buying the foods or ingredients in the grocery.  Teach them to look at the food labels found in the packaging so that they will understand better the importance of good nutrition in the body.  They may also help in the kitchen at a certain limit for they might get injured.  Just give them a task that is danger-free.  Getting our kids involved will prepare them to make good decisions in food preparation when they grow up.

Following these tips will not only give our kids a healthy body, but will also prepare them to become responsible individuals in the future.  They too, can become good parents in their time. We can also give them a happy and healthy life.
